ESYHF TRAVELS TO DETROIT

Participants Compete in National Diversity Tournament

(DETROIT, MI, February 15-17, 2008) Two teams comprised of 34 ESYHF players and 6 ESYHF coaches recently traveled to Detroit, MI to compete in the 4th annual Hockey in the Hood Tournament celebrating the 50th anniversary of Willie O’Ree breaking the color barrier in the National Hockey League. The tournament featured NHL Diversity Programs from 10 different cities all across the United States. Participants from ESYHF were selected to participate in the tournament based upon their dedication to the sport, positive attitude and hard work in the classroom.

After departing Philadelphia early on Friday, February 15, players and coaches were facing a 10-hour bus ride to Detroit where a weekend full of hockey and fun was waiting for them. In addition to playing 6 hockey games in the tournament, ESYHF participants ventured to the Joe Louis Arena on Friday night to take in the Detroit Red Wings – Columbus Blue Jackets game. On Saturday night, players and coaches from all participating teams attended an Awards Banquet at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Hotel. The dinner was held in honor of Willie O’Ree, who broke the NHL color barrier in 1958. Mr. O’Ree was on hand for the weekend festivities and spent time taking pictures, signing autographs and interacting with ESYHF players.

Hockey in the Hood IV was the first occasion for ESYHF players to compete against other NHL Diversity programs and many relished the opportunity. Overall, the trip to Detroit was a highly successful one for ESYHF and an unforgettable experience for all those who attended.
